I began my studies to obtain my Bachelors in Nursing in the fall of 2012, with the course Nursing 316 – Expanding Roles in the Professional Nursing Practice. This course focused on examining contemporary nursing issues in professional practice and issues that nurses may experience while returning to school. After completion of this course I was able to identify many roles that nurses may take on such as leader, advocate, researcher, and educator. Nursing 316 also helped me to strengthen my critical thinking and communication skills and made me a more culturally competent nurse.
In the spring of 2013, I took Nursing 404 – Health Policy. This course focused on social, psychological, cultural, political, legal, economic, and ethical issues which effect healthcare delivery. I learned a great deal about the healthcare reform in Nursing 404. Upon completion of Health Policy, I was able to analyze and synthesize processes related to the development of health policies.
Also in the spring of 2013, I took Nursing 406 – Leadership and Management in Nursing. This course introduced the main concepts of leadership and management amongst nurses. It reviewed theories of management and leadership, role development, legal ramifications of delegation, and the political process of nursing. This course taught me what skills are needed to be a leader and/or manager in the nursing profession. I also learned a great deal about the legal and ethical responsibilities of nursing management.
In the summer of 2013, I took Nursing 480 – Transcultural Nursing. This course was extremely interesting to me, we learned about beliefs and values that may affect health care delivery amongst several different cultural groups. Nursing 480 really helped to expand my understanding and perception of health and illness among many different sociocultural populations. Upon completion of Transcultural Nursing I was much more culturally competent and aware of cultural differences and health maintenance within various cultures. I feel much more comfortable and competent caring for patients whose culture may be different from mine.
In the fall of 2013, I took Nursing 334- Gerontlogical Nursing/End of Life Care. This course was designed to introduce advanced nursing concepts that pertain to the care and health maintenance of the older adult. Many older adults have complex health problems, and Nursing 334 taught information related to the pathophysiology of diseases and changes in function. Gerontological Nursing has helped me a great deal in caring for my patients. The course taught me how to better assess and manage the care of a patient with complex health problems. I also learned what is considered to be a normal part of the aging process, and what is not...which is important in the assessment of the older adult.
In the spring of 2014, I began my last semester of the BSN program. The first course I took was Nursing 415 – Nursing Research. This course introduced nursing research design and analysis. Throughout this course I read and critiqued several different research articles. I also completed a research paper utilizing evidenced based practice and the Stetlar model. This course taught me a lot about the research process including how to apply the research process, differences between quantitative and qualitative research and analyze research reports.
The final course of the RN to BSN program was Nursing 405 – Community Health Nursing. This course introduced and focused on the core concepts of public health nursing. It reviewed the sociological, epidemic, nursing and environmental components of caring for the public or community. Throughout this course I learned to do both a community assessment and a family assessment. I learned about nursing care and how it relates to specific vulnerable populations, those with communicable disease and health promotion/prevention in the community.
