I attended Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC from 2005 until 2009. I spent the first couple of years there completing basic college courses and prerequisites for their nursing program. In the fall of 2007 I began my nursing studies. I graduated in May of 2009 with my Associate’s Degree from Cape Fear. I took a few years off from school to work, but with the persuasion of my manager I returned to school in 2012 to pursue by Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. I decided the RN to BSN program at the University of Wilmington North Carolina was best for me because it would allow me to complete the program part-time online. I have continued this course of study and plan to graduate with my Bachelor’s in Nursing in May of 2014.
In late 2011 I began, and continue to serve in New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Nursing Congress. The purpose of Nursing Congress is to allow nurses who actually deliver patient care to be involved in making recommendations and decisions regarding the practice of nursing throughout the organization. Core values of Nursing Congress include Patient Care, Professional Environment and Professional Accountability; it’s members demonstrate and promote ownership, teamwork, communication and compassion. In 2012 I became a member of the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses (AMSN). The AMSN is a professional organization which is dedicated to the development of Registered Nurses. They help to foster the highest standards of practice, facilitate continuing education and promote excellence among nurses. It was through the AMSN’s affiliated certifying board – Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), in 2012 that I became a Certified Medical Surgical Nurse. Certification with the MSNCB shows that I have taken extra steps to validate my skills and that I am committed to excellence in my medical surgical nursing practice.
Continuing education is maintained annually through classroom activities, online courses and reviewing professional journals. I also retain my competency and certification in both Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. I renew my certifications every two years through the American Heart Association.
