Throughout my five year nursing career, I have set and accomplished many goals. A few goals that I am proud to say I have accomplished include joining Nursing Congress, returning to school to get my Bachelors in Nursing and becoming a Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse. However, these are all just gateways to my ultimate goal of being a Nurse Manager. After I graduate with my BSN, a short term goal I have established is to begin to prepare and take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Another short term goal would be to begin to look into and research different online colleges’ that offer a Master’s of Science – Nurse Leadership and Management program. Once I have found the program that is right for me and my goal of becoming a nurse manager, I will apply and hopefully begin my studies to obtain my Master Degree. A weakness of mine is the lack of leadership opportunities I have had. In order to be a nurse leader and manager I need to try and take on more of a leadership role in my current position as a staff nurse. A great example of a leader is a charge nurse, I can attend a charge nurse work shop my work offers so I can learn the duties of a charge nurse; then I too can fulfill the role of charge nurse. I am on nursing congress now, but in order to gain more leadership skills maybe I could apply to be on the Board of Nursing Congress and serve as Chair. There are many opportunities for leadership in my career as a nurse; I will try to be more proactive as this will help to facilitate my ultimate and long term goal of one day being a nurse manager.
